Physiotherapy News

Nechama from the Litegait company flew in from New York to spend a full day at the Centre to give the physiotherapy team an intensive, advanced training session. Together with UK based Ollie, who filmed much of the training, Nechama gave our physio staff a master class in using the Litegait machine.

The main aim of the day was to explore the wide range of diagnostics accessible from the Litegait software so that physiotherapy sessions could be tailored even more precisely to the needs of the individual.

LiteGait video at Leicestershire MS Therapy Centre showing that regular use of this impressive machine can have a significant effect.

Seven willing (?) volunteers gave Nechama seven different problems to investigate and all seven left the Centre having progressed and worked muscles they had forgotten they had. It quickly became clear to all that regular use of this impressive machine can have a significant effect on managing our conditions.

It was clear to all present that many different conditions and people could benefit from following a physiotherapy led programme on the Litegait. It enables users to exercise and improve posture and mobility whilst removing any risk of falling. We saw different individuals standing upright with good posture; others worked on their gait, relearning how to walk naturally again; each person was able to work on stride length, bending knees and ankles, flexing feet and improving foot placement, even learning to jump again. We all realised that re-learning movements we once took for granted is possible, with commitment and repetition.

Most of us with mobility issues have concerns that the way we have adapted our movement to cope with our different conditions could lead to further problems such as arthritis, joint displacement and back pain. Re-educating our bodies by using the Litegait might help us to postpone or avoid future problems, as well as giving us a chance to improve our day-to-day mobility.

The physiotherapy team have been supported by Camron and Nirali who are qualified practitioners gaining valuable work experience through the Autumn and Charlotte and Elizabeth joined us for a 5 weeks placement as part of their undergraduate physiotherapy studies at Nottingham University during November.

All 4 have been great ambassadors for the Centre and enhanced the experience of centre users.

Fundraising News

Kate and George completed their marathon challenge in France. They completed the course in good time, George 3hr 21 min and Kate 3hr 46min. Their efforts have raised a magnificent £3988 for the Therapy Centre, some of which has been used to facilitate the Litegait training.

Manika and Shree Pankhania sadly lost their mum Gayetri Pankhania Vegod (Geeta) recently. Their family and friends chose to raise money for the Centre in her memory and their great generosity will benefit the Centre with £4312. A lovely legacy for a lovely, much missed lady.

We have already reported on the donation from Peoples’ Postcode Lottery, whose £40,000 has made November a bumper fund-raising month.
